The Arthur J. Lelyveld Center for Jewish Learning was established in 1986. The library is open when the building is open and when it’s not being utilized for a special event/meeting. You will also find recent books on special shelves in the Religious School Commons that are available for loan.
Our Library:
Rabbi Arthur J. Lelyveld was Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple’s spiritual leader from 1958-1986 and Senior Rabbi Emeritus until his passing in 1996. He was leader in Reform Judaism who was active in social causes including fostering closer relations between Blacks and Jews. He was beaten by white segregationists with tire irons in 1964 while helping to register Black voters in Mississippi. You can read more about him here.
